About Colorado SkillsUSA

thinker

Colorado SkillsUSA is a member of the national SkillsUSA organization. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA serves high school and college students who are enrolled in programs preparing them for technical, skilled and service careers. SkillsUSA adds to students’ technical training by teaching them leadership skills, teamwork, citizenship and character development – all components that go into shaping responsible, reliable employees who will one day become the leaders in our workplaces.

Colorado SkillsUSA served over 2500 students in 2007, adding to a national membership of over 285,000 students. Colorado SkillsUSA programs include district and state competitions in which students compete in; leadership development, occupationally related and trade, industrial and technical contests. Over 550 students and advisors attended the 2007 Colorado Leadership and Skills Championships competing in 14 leadership and 21 skill events. First place winners went on to compete at the annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) held in Kansas City MO.

Although the competitions are the most stimulating activity for many students’, the competitions are secondary to the goal of leadership development. Colorado SkillsUSA is focused on growth and continuous improvement. Our goal is to provide opportunities for students to develop their full potential in the areas of leadership, academics, transitional and organizational skills. To compete, students need to plan, help organize a local or district competition, meet with volunteers, do community service, organize fundraising and manage their local SkillsUSA Chapter. These “hands-on” processes provide experience in business letter writing, project management, networking, communications and team work, all areas that will help in their future employment.
